Marrying couples who are in search of kosher catering must know of the following restrictions in the foods to be served:
On birds, fishes and other animals:
Birds of prey and mammals are generally prohibited by the Torah, the religious book of the Jews. Water birds that prey on fishes are also not allowed because they consume living creatures. Fishes and any sea creatures having fins and scales are typically allowed to be served. Four-legged animals that have cloven hooves and chew cuds are not prohibited. However, the animals have to be doing both to be considered as clean.
On blood:
Blood present in food makes the meal unclean because the former is considered as bearing life itself. Therefore, preparing meat the Jewish way has to be thorough and intricate so that the blood is totally removed from the food.
On animal products:
Animal products consist of milk, cheese, eggs, and other dairy foods that come from or are procured from specific species. Most of these animal products are considered unclean unless they come from kosher species. However, the rule changes if the kosher animal has been diseased before being slaughtered. This means that the produce then becomes non-kosher.
